“I am madly in love.” Honesdale High School graduating senior Devan George used these words to describe her love of nature. This love affair began with puffins when she visited Maine in the fourth grade. She was heartbroken to learn that puffin habitats were in danger. Since that day, Devan has been passionate in her desire to “experience, help and become educated about the natural world.” Devan’s excellent academic record will enable her to prepare for her chosen career in environmental law. She is planning to attend the University of New Hampshire this fall.
Devan has succeeded in a rigorous and demanding academic program. She started Honesdale High School’s first environmental club, and studied environmental science in a summer college program. She was a medal winner in the Envirothon/Science Olympiad. Her most pressing concern is the preservation of the earth’s water supply. Clean water is in jeopardy locally and internationally. How can we protect this essential resource? For Devan, this question looms large.
