Canal Clean-up and Picnic on 5/5

Come meet with volunteers of the Wayne County Historical Society on Saturday, May 5, at Lock 31, Lock 31 House, one mile west of Hawley, PA on Rte. 6, for a morning of work (and fun) cleaning up a section of the former Delaware and Hudson Canal. We’ll set to work at about 9 am and continue until 1 pm.

Then while admiring the fruits of our labors, we’ll enjoy a barbecue and potluck lunch and hear about the exciting progress the Society is making to restore the Lock House and this section of the Canal, designated a local National Historic Landmark.

Don’t forget to bring you rakes, mowers, weedwhackers and pruners!

Please RSVP by email indicating your intention to join this worthwhile effort and indicate what you’d like to contribute to the pot luck.

Local Groups Join Together for Annual Towpath Trash Pick-up

Under a brilliant autumn sky, on Saturday morning, October 22, members of The Lackawaxen River Conservancy, Bernt Balchen Lodge (Sons of Norway) and Men of Bethel gathered at Mt. Moriah cemetery at Kimbles for their annual fall trash pick-up under the PennDOT Adopt-a-Highway Program. Scouring most of a ten-mile stretch of the scenic Towpath between Kimbles and Rowland, they enjoyed the crystalline autumn air and the vibrant colors of fall as they collected close to twenty bags of trash–comprised mostly of beer cans of various vintages, tattered plastic bags, fast-food containers as well as discarded construction materials. Afterward they posed for a photograph at Bright’s fishing supply shop and celebrated their good work with a lunch at the Rowland Café.

The Lackawaxen River Conservancy Scholarship is open to all college-bound twelfth-grade students who live and attend school in the Lackawaxen Watershed, who intend to pursue a career supporting environmental conservation, and who plan to major in college in a subject area that will lead to the achievement of this career goal. Towpath trash pickup on 10/22

Best way to enjoy the fall colors!

Here’s your chance to be outdoors and enjoy nature’s autumn glory, to do good while having a good time. Come join your fellow members and friends of The Lackawaxen River Conservancy for our semi-annual Towpath trash pick-up on Saturday, October 22, 2011. We’ll meet at Mt. Moriah cemetery at 11 a.m. and spread out along the Towpath from there. In past years, there hasn’t been all that much trash to pick up, so it shouldn’t take much more than an hour of your time. Afterward we’ll gather for a bit of socializing and lunch at the Rowland Cafe, together with members of the Bernt Balchen Sons of Norway Lodge and the Men of Bethel, who will be cleaning up their respective stretches of the Towpath.

Let’s see who can fill the most trash bags!

“The Next Frontier” screening on 10/18

The Lackawaxen River Conservancy is hosting a screening of Emmy Award winning documentary, The Next Frontier: Engineering the Golden Age of Green, on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at the PPL Environmental Center, Rte. 6, Hawley, PA.

This one-hour documentary focuses on the renewable, clean energy technologies that can improve our future and create significant economic and job opportunities. Host Becky Worley of ABC’s Good Morning America travels the world looking for the solutions that address the serious problems of excessive carbon dioxide emissions and our dependence on fossil fuels.

The Next Frontier was honored for Outstanding Achievement: Documentary and Outstanding Achievement: Graphics and Animation.

All are welcome to attend. Admission is free.
